About UpGoods Studio

Who is behind UpGoods Studio?

UpGoods Studio is run by Maya — a Rochester, NY native raised in a family of creatives and environmentalists.

Growing up surrounded by making, mending, reimagining, and caring for what already exists shaped the foundation of this studio. UpGoods is a natural extension of that upbringing: part creativity, part resourcefulness, and part love of color and play.

Where are your products made?

All products are thoughtfully designed and handmade in Buffalo, New York.

Why did you start UpGoods Studio?

UpGoods Studio began with a simple belief: nothing is truly disposable — only undiscovered.

With millions of tons of textile waste generated each year in the U.S., it became impossible to ignore how much usable, beautiful material already exists. Rather than contributing to excess production, UpGoods focuses on reimagining what’s already here — transforming overlooked paper and textiles into vibrant, joyful creations.

It’s a small but intentional step toward creativity that feels both playful and responsible.

Materials & Sustainability

Collapsible content

Are your materials truly reclaimed?

Yes - we begin and lead each piece with reclaimed materials with thoughtful exceptions for durability and quality. We source the main materials for each piece from deadstock, overstock, recycled, and thrifted textiles and papers. Everything is carefully selected and thoroughly cleaned before becoming part of a new creation.

Because we work with functional goods, some components and notions are sourced new to ensure durability, safety, and a consistent finished product. For example, hardware such as rivets or snaps would be purchased new, while elements like zippers may be reclaimed when quality allows. This balance helps us maintain a productive workflow while still prioritizing material reuse wherever we can.

Here’s what those terms mean:

  • Deadstock fabric: Surplus fabric produced by mills or manufacturers that was never used in production. Instead of being discarded, it’s given new life.

  • Overstock fabric: Excess inventory from manufacturers or retailers that would otherwise sit unused or be disposed of.

  • Recycled fabric: Material that has been processed and remade into usable textile form from previously used fibers or garments.

  • Upcycled: The process of transforming existing materials into something new and often higher in value — without breaking them down into raw fibers first.

Intention is the goal. We prioritize reimagining what already exists while making practical choices that ensure quality and durability - reimagination over excess.

What does “upcycled” really mean?

Upcycling is the process of transforming existing materials into something new and often more valuable — without reducing them back to raw fibers.

Instead of discarding textiles or paper, we redesign and reconstruct them into fresh creations, extending their life and reducing waste in the process.

Do you minimize packaging waste?

Yes.

We reuse clean packing materials whenever possible and incorporate sustainably sourced new materials only when necessary. Packaging is kept minimal and aligned with our values — protective, thoughtful, and low-waste.

Products & Personalization

Collapsible content

Are your pieces one-of-a-kind?

Yes.

Each item is handmade, with fabrics thoughtfully hand-selected to create a vibrant, playful feel. While some products are made in small batches, pattern placement will naturally vary depending on how the fabric is cut.

That means your piece may look slightly different from the photos — and that uniqueness is part of its charm.

Do you offer custom or personalized orders?

We offer personalization on select products. If an item includes a personalization option, you’ll be able to add those details before checkout.

At this time, we are not accepting fully custom design requests. However, we’re always developing new products and collections — and we genuinely love hearing what you're looking for. If it aligns with our product line and values, it may inspire something new.

Can I request specific colors or materials?

Not at this time.

Because we work primarily with reclaimed and limited materials, availability shifts frequently. This allows each collection to feel unique — but it also means we’re unable to guarantee specific fabrics or color requests.

Can you create something from materials I send you?

Not at this time.

While we love the idea of deeply personal material reuse, our current production model doesn’t allow us to accept customer-supplied materials. We carefully source and prepare all materials used in the studio to ensure quality and consistency.

How big is my item? How much can it hold?

Gifting

Collapsible content

Do you offer gift wrapping?

We don’t offer traditional “standard” gift wrapping — the kind designed to be torn off and thrown away. Staying true to our values, we avoid single-use materials whenever possible.

However, if your purchase includes one of our cloth wraps and you indicate that it’s a gift at checkout, we’ll thoughtfully wrap your items using the cloth as part of the presentation. That way, the wrapping becomes part of the gift itself — reusable, beautiful, and intentional.

Because at UpGoods Studio, even the wrapping deserves a second life.

Can you include a handwritten note?

Yes.

If you’re sending your purchase as a gift, simply include your message at checkout and we’ll happily add a handwritten note to your order.

Because meaningful details matter.
